Alexander Danel
B.S., Computer Science, Stanford
My father is a Christian survivor of Auschwitz.
He was a member of the Auschwitz orchestra, and
a sketch he drew is in the Auschwitz museum archives.
At the time of the German invasion he was a member of the
Polish army and fought, including some anti-tank action.
Under occupation, he carried out espionage, including
stealing identification cards which allowed a number of
Jews to survive the war as non-Jews. A Polish acquaintance
owned a pistol and was caught and executed; my father
was convicted of knowing him and of allowing a partisan
spend a night in his apartment. My father was in Auschwitz
until the final evacuation. Sent then to Oranenburg, he was
forced to work on production of fighter aircraft, which he
sabotaged.
